A groundskeeper since 2008, Francisco Hernandez has an eye for detail and a passion to keep the landscape for which he is responsible aesthetically pleasing for the campus community. Especially for the student population, faculty, staff, and visitors. He views the landscape as an artistic canvas where one can enjoy the fragrance of a hybrid tea rose, the vibrant colors of a bush lantana, or the solitude of the shade under a grand coast live oak tree.
Whether it is shaping a rhapiolepsis shrub, pulling invasive weeds, or watering annual color plants that need a drink, Francisco cares. He treats the campus landscape as if it were his own property and for everyone to enjoy.
With budget constraints, the landscape department must be very creative when enhancing planters, and Francisco has skillfully collected and planted cuttings to make a landscape planter appear whole. On many occasions, he has recommended removing and transplanting plants from areas that were to be demolished for building construction and has even split plant material to fill in planters of the same species. This way of thinking has been invaluable to his team.
Francisco does not shy away from hard tasks, and in most cases gravitates toward the difficult task, resolving any issues without complaint. He communicates very well with his fellow employees, mentors new employees, and quickly assists when situations arise. He recognizes the work of others and acknowledges their successes.
Francisco’s positive attitude and work ethic are contagious, making him one of nine employees to be presented the Outstanding Staff Award from UCR Staff Assembly this year, honored in the category of Staff Who Make a Difference – Service.
Please join Facilities Services in congratulating Francisco on this phenomenal recognition.
